The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), established in 1999 via Act 12, amended by Act 50, manages disasters in Nigeria. Headquartered in Abuja, it coordinates responses to crises like floods and oil spills under Director-General Zubaida Umar.

Mandate: NEMA formulates disaster management policies, monitors preparedness, and coordinates efficient responses nationwide. It educates the public on disaster prevention and distributes relief materials.

Operations: NEMA operates a GIS lab for early warnings, mobile clinics in Abuja, Kaduna, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, and a helicopter for search and rescue. It collaborates with state agencies and international bodies.

Achievements: In 2025, NEMA aided 144 returnees from Libya and distributed relief for oil spill victims in Port Harcourt.

Challenges: Negligence, funding, and slow adoption of technology hinder effectiveness, though NEMA is advancing prevention-focused strategies.
