Eedris Turayo Abdulkareem Ajenifuja, known professionally as Eedris Abdulkareem, was born on December 24, 1974, in Kano, Nigeria.
Raised in a polygamous family, he adopted Kano as his state of origin. He began his musical journey in the 1990s as the lead rapper of the influential hip-hop group The Remedies, alongside Tony Tetuila and Eddy Montana.
The group was pivotal in popularising Nigerian hip-hop, blending local languages and themes with contemporary beats.
After the group's disbandment in 2002, Abdulkareem embarked on a solo career, releasing albums such as P.A.S.S (2002) and Mr. Lecturer (2002), the latter addressing issues of sexual harassment in Nigerian universities.
Activism Through Music
Abdulkareem is renowned for using his music as a platform to critique societal and political issues. His 2004 album Jaga Jaga criticised corruption and poor governance in Nigeria, leading to its ban by the government.
In 2024, he released "Emi Lokan," a song that criticized the administrations of Presidents Bola Tinubu and Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting the high cost of living and perceived hypocrisy among religious leaders.
In April 2025, his song "Tell Your Papa" was banned by the National Broadcasting Commission for its critical lyrics directed at President Tinubu's administration.
Abdulkareem condemned the ban, describing the government as "insensitive" and accusing it of stifling free expression.
Personal Life and Health
Abdulkareem married Yetunde in 2004, and the couple has three children. In August 2022, he underwent a successful kidney transplant at St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos, with his wife serving as the donor.
He publicly expressed profound gratitude to his wife for this life-saving act.
