Born on September 8, 1994, in Maia, Portugal, Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes began his football journey at Boavista's youth academy. At 17, he moved to Italy, joining Serie B side Novara in 2012. His performances there earned him a transfer to Serie A club Udinese in 2013, followed by a move to Sampdoria in 2016. In 2017, Fernandes returned to Portugal, signing with Sporting CP, where he became a standout performer.

During his time at Sporting CP, Fernandes established himself as one of Europe's top midfielders. In the 2018–19 season, he scored 33 goals in all competitions, making him the highest-scoring Portuguese midfielder in a single season. He also won back-to-back Taças da Liga and the Taça de Portugal, earning the Primeira Liga Player of the Year award in both seasons.
Move to Manchester United
In January 2020, Fernandes joined Manchester United for an initial €55 million (£47 million), becoming the second-highest fee for a Portuguese player leaving the domestic league at the time. Since then, he has made over 250 appearances for the club in the English Premier League, contributing significantly to their midfield. In July 2023, Fernandes was appointed Manchester United's club captain, succeeding Harry Maguire.
International career
Fernandes has been a key figure for the Portugal national team since his debut in 2017. He represented Portugal in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and the UEFA European Championships in 2020 and 2024.
