The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is a paramilitary agency under the Ministry of Interior.

It was established in 1967 to protect lives, properties, and critical infrastructure. Headquartered in Abuja, it operates nationwide, collaborating with other security agencies.

History and Evolution: Founded as the Lagos Civil Defence Committee during the Nigerian Civil War, the NSCDC became a national security outfit in 1984. It was formalised by the NSCDC Act of 2003, amended in 2007 to enhance its capacity.

Mandate and Functions: The NSCDC safeguards pipelines, combats vandalism, and manages disasters. It also oversees private guard companies and conducts intelligence operations.

Leadership: Led by Commandant-General Ahmed Audi, the NSCDC deploys 25,000 personnel for security operations.

Achievements and Challenges: The Corps has uncovered 460 illegal mining sites and arrested 387 suspects in 14 months. Challenges include improving training and resources.
