NIS - Nigeria Immigration Service

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), which was established in 1963 under the Ministry of Interior, was set up to manage migration, border control, and the issuance of travel documents.

Headquartered in Abuja, it operates across Nigeria’s borders, airports, and 36 state commands, led by the Comptroller-General.

With thousands of personnel, NIS issues passports, visas, and residence permits while combating irregular migration and human trafficking.

It is saddled with the responsibility of enforcing the Immigration Act 2015, ensuring national security and compliance with ECOWAS protocols.

Key initiatives include e-Passport systems and the Border Management Information System (MIDAS) to enhance efficiency.

Despite challenges like corruption and understaffing, NIS contributes to Nigeria’s security and economic growth through migration management.

It also conducts deportation and repatriation operations.
