
INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is Nigeria’s electoral body responsible for overseeing elections. It is an autonomous agency mandated to organise, conduct, and supervise elections in Nigeria’s federal and state elections. INEC ensures free, fair, and credible elections as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.
Mandate and Functions
- Organise Elections
Conducts elections for the presidency, National Assembly, governorship, and state houses of assembly.
- Registers political parties and candidates.
Voter Registration, registers eligible Nigerian voters, issues Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to facilitate voting.
- Regulation and Monitoring
Regulates political party activities and campaign financing. Monitors compliance with electoral laws and guidelines.
- Education and Awareness
Educates citizens on electoral processes and the importance of voting, and promotes peaceful conduct during elections.
- Dispute Resolution
Works alongside judicial bodies to resolve electoral disputes and challenges.
- Career and Leadership
INEC was established by the Electoral Act 1998 and restructured in 2010, and subsequent amendments.
The commission is headed by a Chairman appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, and composed of resident electoral commissioners representing each state.
