Background
Godswill Akpabio is the president of the 10th Senate. He represents the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district at the Nigerian Senate. After bagging a law degree, Akpabio started his career as a teacher before he joined Paul Usoro and Co as an associate lawyer. He joined politics in 2002 and has occupied various political posts.
Political career
- While in secondary school, Akpabio was the senior prefect
- In the 1987/88 parliamentary year of the University of Calabar, Akpabio was elected as the Student Union Government speaker
- Between 2002 and 2006, he was appointed the commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources by former Governor Obong Victor Attah, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Lands and Housing
- In 2007- 2015, he was elected the governor of Akwa Ibom state and reelected in 2011
- From 2015 to 2018, he won the election to the Senate to represent the North-West senatorial district of Akwa Ibom state on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and was voted for as the Minority Leader of the 8th Senate in 2015
- In August 2018, he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and resigned from his position as the minority leader
- Betweeb 2019 and 2022, he was the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs
- In June 2022, Akpabio resigned as the minister for Niger Delta Affairs and contested in the presidential primaries of the ruling APC but later stepped down for Bola Tinubu who later won the primaries
- After the presidential primaries, he emerged as the Senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district and later won the election
- On 13 June 2023, he was elected president of the Senate of Nigeria of the 10th National Assembly.
