Emeka Ihedioha is a Nigerian politician, businessman, and former governor of Imo State. Born on March 24, 1965, in Mbutu, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, Imo State, he has had a distinguished career in both public service and business.
Early Life and Education
Ihedioha began his education at Town School, Mbutu, and later attended SDA Primary School in Yaba, Lagos. He completed his secondary education at St. Ephraim’s Secondary School, Owerrinta, in present-day Abia State.
In 1988, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of Lagos.
He furthered his studies with an executive certificate in Financial Management from Stanford University and a leadership certificate from Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Political Career
Ihedioha's political journey began in 2003 when he was elected to represent the Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. He served until 2015, holding significant positions such as Chief Whip and Deputy Speaker.
In 2015, he briefly served as Acting Speaker following Aminu Tambuwal's election as governor of Sokoto State.
In 2019, Ihedioha contested the Imo State gubernatorial election under the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
However, on January 14, 2020, the Supreme Court of Nigeria annulled his election and declared Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the rightful winner.
Personal Life and Business Interests
Ihedioha is married to Ebere Ihedioha, and they have four children. His business ventures span real estate development, industrialised farming, hospitality, power, and petroleum sectors.
He is also a philanthropist, particularly active in his native Imo State. An avid supporter of the Arsenal football club, he enjoys travelling and playing table tennis.
In April 2024, Ihedioha resigned from the PDP after 26 years, citing internal crises within the party. His resignation marked a significant shift in his political affiliations.
