In one of the interviews, Wasiu Alabi said that he has gone through hell, suffering as he was single-handedly raised by his mother as his parents got separated when he was nine years old. He said there were days when they had no food to eat at all and days when they only ate once a day. There were other days when his mother insisted that he ate before going to sleep while she would go to bed hungry. Some days she would give him money to school but some days she wouldn’t.

“When someone asks you where you are from and you say Mushin, they don’t want to have anything to do with you”.

But the singer perceived it as a challenge. When he was a young boy living in Mushin, he decided that he wanted to get out of the place and make people know that it was not only rascally people that came out of Mushin.

Pasuma’s father wanted him to be a medical doctor. His father, a well-educated man, didn’t want his son to have a rough life which musician career was associated with. His mother didn’t want her son to be a Fuji musician as well. She told to Wasiu Alabi:

“Do you want your father’s family to think I don’t know what I am doing, that I am not taking care of you? Do you want your father’s words to come to pass?”

“Mummy, don’t worry, I will survive it”.

He didn’t expect that everything would be like that, he just told his mother not to worry. After she realized after so much persuasion that he had chosen his path, she supported him:

“She supported me with prayers. She encouraged me to succeed because she wanted to be able to stand before my father and his family and proudly say this is her son in spite of all they had said. And thank God it has come to pass. My daddy and his family now point to me saying “omo wani, omo wani” meaning he is our son. For my success, I will give thanks to God and to my mum”.

In 80’s and 90’s, he used to play at the hotels in Mushin, Ojuelegba, Ebute Metta, Surulere, Jibawi and others. In 1993, Eru Owa Records offered the artist to record an album for him. He refused initially, but they insisted and urged him to try. In the end, they signed an agreement which gave birth to his debut album titled “Recognition”.

Even though Pasuma remained faithful to his musical roots and Yoruba street lifestyle that he lived, he always was interested in hip-hop lifestyle Nigerian artists like Wasiu Ayinde Barrister, Osupa, KWAM1 lived. Even the way Pasuma dressed was a ‘hip-hop’ style: denim jackets, Tommy Hilfiger shirts, baggy jeans, Kangol caps, and Heavy style glasses. The singer says that once, after watching him on the stage on several occasions, Adeola Omotayo called him aside and asked:

"Jibola do you know that the way you bounce and jump about on the stage, reminds one of a guy I know who uses a brand of energiser called Pasuma Strong?" “My feeling then was, if the drug is that good, maybe, it could bring me luck”.
