Douye Diri is a Nigerian politician and the 12th Governor of Bayelsa State, having assumed office on February 14, 2020.

Education

Born on June 4, 1959, in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, he hails from a family with deep roots in the Ijaw community.

Diri's educational journey includes a National Certificate in Education from the College of Education, Port Harcourt, and a Bachelor of Education in Political Science from the University of Port Harcourt.

Political Ascendancy

Before his gubernatorial tenure, Diri served as the Senator for Bayelsa Central from 2019 to 2020.

His path to the governorship was marked by a Supreme Court ruling that annulled the 2019 election results, citing irregularities in the APC candidate's credentials.

This decision paved the way for Diri to be sworn in as governor in February 2020.

Second Term and Governance

In the November 2023 gubernatorial election, Diri secured re-election with 60.93% of the vote, defeating APC's Timipre Sylva.

His administration has focused on infrastructure development, including the completion of the Bayelsa International Airport and the Nembe Unity Bridge.

Additionally, in October 2024, he approved an N80,000 minimum wage for state workers and increased pensions for retirees.

Personal Life

Diri is a devout Christian and is married to Gloria Ebibomo Diri, the First Lady of Bayelsa State.
