He stated that he could not just throw the child away and has since been taking care of him.

Dele Odule emotional, shares how he lost his son: “We moved from place to place seeking healing”

Legit.ng contacted Mr. Godwin Ogwuche of GoRu Marriage Counseling and Therapy to better understand the dynamics of Aboy's marriage to his wife.

He shared his view on Aboy's readiness for marriage:

“From a professional point of view, readiness for marriage is not just about age or desire; it also involves a certain level of understanding, communication, and functional ability."
“In this case, reports indicate that Aboy is non-verbal and requires significant daily support for basic activities. That naturally raises questions about how much he understands the concept of marriage and how actively he can participate in it."
“However, instead of looking at it as a simple ‘yes or no,’ I would say this: His readiness depends largely on the level of support around him and the understanding of his partner. The relationship may not follow a conventional pattern, but with the right structure, it may function in a unique way.
“The most important concern is ensuring that he is comfortable, protected, and not overwhelmed, and that his dignity is preserved at all times.”

Legit.ng moved forward with another question, asking what support system should be in place for Aboy's marriage to his wife to succeed.

He explained:

“For a situation like this to work well, a very strong and consistent support system is essential. This kind of marriage cannot rely on love alone; it requires structure and ongoing care.
“Some important support systems include:"
“Continuous caregiving support: Since he requires daily assistance, there should be trained caregivers or helpers available, so the responsibility does not fall on one person alone."
“Family and community involvement: Both partners need emotional and practical support from trusted people around them. This reduces stress and prevents burnout."
“Medical and psychological support: Regular check-ins with professionals (therapists, doctors, or specialists) will help manage his condition and guide the couple."
“Emotional support for the wife: She will need encouragement, counseling, and space to process her own emotions because the role she is stepping into is both marital and caregiving."
“Clear expectations and guidance: Both individuals should have clarity about their roles, limitations, and responsibilities, so there is no confusion or frustration over time."
