Founding: Originating as the Nigerian Marine in 1914 under colonial rule, it evolved into the Nigerian Naval Force in 1956. It gained full naval status in 1963, post-independence, with the Nigerian Navy Act formalizing its role.

Structure: The Navy operates under the Chief of Naval Staff, headquartered in Abuja. It is organised into Western, Eastern, and Central Naval Commands, with key bases in Lagos, Calabar, and Port Harcourt. The force includes combat, logistics, and training units.

Roles & Operations: It secures Nigeria’s 853km coastline and 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone, combating piracy, oil theft, and smuggling. The Navy supports regional stability through operations like Exercise Obangame Express.
