Educational background

Godwin Emefiele holds a 194 Bachelor’s degree in banking and finance from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. In 1986, after his mandatory NYSC programme, he obtained a master's degree in finance from his alma mater. He underwent executive education at Stanford University, Harvard in 2004, and the Wharton School of Business in 2005.

Career highlights

Emefiele started his career as a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of Port Harcourt, teaching finance and insurance. He had over 18 years of banking experience at Zenith Bank and others before his appointment as the CBN governor.

He was appointed the 18th Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on June 4, 2014, by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Before CBN, he was the Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank.

His tenure at CBN saw initiatives like financial inclusion drives, currency redesign, and policies to stabilise the naira.

In May 2022, a group purchased the N100 million All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential nomination and expression of interest forms for Emefiele.

He was suspended as the CBN governor by President Tinubu on June 9, 2023. The suspension came amidst investigations into alleged mismanagement at the CBN.
