Tension as 16 Inmates Attack Warders, Escape From Keffi Prison

Keffi, Nasarawa State - No fewer than sixteen inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

It was gathered that five officers were injured, with two currently in serious condition and receiving treatment at a government hospital.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, said the inmates reportedly overpowered personnel on duty during the breakout.

As reported by The Punch, Abubakar made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Abubakar said seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining nine.

“Some inmates breached the security of the facility and attacked personnel on duty to compromise the situation, enabling 16 inmates to escape custody.
“In the course of containing the situation, five personnel of the Custodial Centre sustained varying degrees of injury, with two currently serious and receiving urgent medical attention at a government health facility.
“Seven of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured and are now in custody.”

Several inmates escape from Kogi prison

Recall that authorities confirmed that 12 inmates escaped from detention in Kogi state on Monday, March 24, 2025.

The prisoners escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, in the prominent northcentral state.

Legit.ng gathered that the jailbreak occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025, as the inmates tampered with the padlocks in a section of the facility, allowing them to escape.

FG places N5m bounty on fleeing inmates

In a similar story, Legit.ng reported that the FG, through the Nigerian Correctional Service, announced a N5 million cash reward for credible information that leads to the recapture of inmates who escaped from Osun prison.

The escape occurred in the early hours of Tuesday following a heavy overnight rainfall, which caused the collapse of a section of the facility’s perimeter wall.

The Deputy Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer for the NCoS, Umar Abubakar, confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday and shared further details.
