Ifeanyichukwu Arthur Okowa studied medicine and surgery at the University of Ibadan and graduated in 1981 with an MBBS at 22.
He worked briefly with the defunct Bendel State Hospitals Management Board as a Medical Officer before he went into private practice as Director, Victory Medical Centre, Igbanke in 1986. As a humanitarian and philanthropist, Okowa renders free medical services to the poor in his community.
During his tenure as Delta state governor, Okowa established three universities in the state, the University of Delta in his home town, Agbor. He also set up the University of Science and Technology, Ozoro and Dennis Osadebe University in Anwai.
Political career highlights
In 1991, Okowa served as Secretary to the Ika Local Government Area and a Chairman Ika North East Local Government Council in 1993. In 1999, he was named commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources.
In 2001, Okowa was appointed a commissioner for Water Resources Development. He served as the Commissioner for Health in 2003 and Secretary to the Delta State Government in 2007.
By 2011, Okowa was elected as a senator representing the Delta North Senatorial district. He won the Delta state gubernatorial election in 2015 and was re-elected in 2019. He finished his second term on May 29, 2023.
In the 2023 presidential election, Okowa was the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was former vice president Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.
