Gboyega Oyetola is a Nigerian politician, technocrat, and businessman who served as the Governor of Osun State from November 2018 to November 2022.

Born on September 29, 1954, in Iragbiji, Osun State, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Insurance from the University of Lagos and an MBA from the same institution.

Before venturing into politics, Oyetola had a successful career in the insurance industry, eventually founding Silvertrust Insurance Brokers Limited in 1991.

He also served as the Chief of Staff to Governor Rauf Aregbesola from 2011 to 2018.

Political Career

Oyetola's political journey began with the Alliance for Democracy (AD), which later evolved into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the 2018 Osun State gubernatorial election, he was declared the winner after a rerun, defeating Senator Ademola Adeleke of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

His tenure was marked by efforts to improve infrastructure, education, and healthcare in the state. However, his administration faced challenges, including controversies surrounding the 2022 gubernatorial election, where he lost to Adeleke.

Ministerial Appointment

In August 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed Oyetola as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.

Initially nominated for the Ministry of Transportation, he was reassigned to the newly created ministry four days later. Despite facing criticism for perceived underperformance, Oyetola retained his position in subsequent cabinet reshuffles.

Personal Life

Oyetola is married to Kafayat Oyetola, a philanthropist and former First Lady of Osun State. Together, they have four children.

In 2021, he was implicated in the Pandora Papers leak for purchasing a London mansion from a fugitive businessman, raising questions about transparency in his financial dealings.

As of May 2025, Oyetola continues to serve as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, focusing on the development of Nigeria's maritime and coastal resources.
