Influential Northern Senator Dumps PDP, Defects to Ruling APC

Ahead of the 2023 general election, an influential northern Senator, Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba has dumped the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This move was made known through a letter read by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan on Wednesday, April 27, during plenary.

According to Lawan, the senator has announced his decision to leave the opposition party, and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

A tweet shared by the Nigerian Senate on its verified Twitter handle also confirmed the development.

The tweet reads:

"Senate President @DrAhmadLawan reads a letter from Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba, announcing his defection from the opposition @OfficialPDPNig to the ruling @OfficialAPCNg."

Meanwhile, the details surrounding his decision to join the ruling APC according to The Cable were a result of the unending crisis in the PDP.

Despite news confirming the defection of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the PDP, the former Kano state governor had stated that he was still a member of the red and white flag party.

Kwankwaso disclosed that his allegiance still lies with PDP even though he admitted that talks are ongoing with New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

It was gathered that after holding a closed-door meeting in Abuja to foster the move, a scheduled date of Wednesday, March 30 was chosen as the national convention of the party.

2023: Governorship aspirant dumps APC, defects to PDP in Oyo state

Meanwhile, one of the leading governorship aspirants in the APC in Oyo state, Mogaji Joseph Tegbe, has defected to the PDP.

This development came on the heels of the continued crisis within the APC which has claimed its first casualty.

Tegbe's defection was reportedly perfected late Tuesday night, April 12, after months of intense pressure.

It was learnt that the new decampee will now move from Ibadan South East in Oyo South to his village in Ona-Ara local government area in Oyo central senatorial district.
