Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the Yoruba movie industry.
The actor, who spent more than four decades entertaining audiences, rose from humble beginnings as an automobile mechanic to become one of the familiar faces of Nigerian cinema.
Ogogo was not only known for his memorable acting roles. He also worked as a producer, director, and screenwriter, contributing to the growth of Yoruba-language cinema over several decades.

1. A thespian born in Ogun State
Taiwo Hassan was born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State. He spent his early years there before moving to Lagos, where he pursued his education, learnt a trade, and eventually began building the career that would make him a household name.
2. He was popularly known as Ogogo
Although his real name was Taiwo Hassan, he became widely known as Ogogo. Over the years, the nickname became inseparable from his identity and was associated with Yoruba movies, family dramas, traditional stories, and characters caught in difficult moral conflicts.
3. An automobile mechanic with a dream
Before becoming a full-time actor, Ogogo trained and worked as an automobile mechanic. He also spent about 13 years at the Lagos State Water Corporation, balancing his government job with his growing interest in acting before eventually choosing the entertainment industry.
4. Found acting in 1981
Ogogo began his acting career in 1981 while still working as a mechanic. He learnt through practical theatre experience and gradually established himself in the Yoruba entertainment scene. His career would eventually span more than four decades and several generations of movie lovers.
5. He quit his government job to focus on acting
After years of combining acting with his job at the Lagos State Water Corporation, Ogogo resigned in 1994 to pursue acting full-time. The decision came as Nigeria's home-video industry was gaining momentum, allowing him to devote himself fully to the profession he had started years earlier.

Ogogo was more than an actor. He worked as a producer, director and screenwriter, taking part in the creative process behind several productions. 8. ‘Aníkúlápó’ introduced him to a new generation
His portrayal of Alaafin Ademuyiwa in Kunle Afolayan's 2022 Netflix film Aníkúlápó introduced his talent to a younger and wider global audience. The acclaimed production helped remind many viewers of Ogogo's versatility, while his performance earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards.
9. Coming from a family with a history of twins
Ogogo once revealed that his mother gave birth to four sets of twins and that he was the only surviving child. The actor also spoke strongly about fatherhood and parental responsibility, stressing the importance of men being present and accountable in the lives of their children.
10. His career spanned generations of Yoruba cinema

Ogogo, daughter warm hearts with funny posts
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that actor Ogogo's daughter, Kira Taiwo, got Nigerians talking over a post she made online.
The Yoruba film star spotted Kira's post on her Instagram page and reacted to it with surprise.
Nigerians took to social media to react, as many laughed at the film star, saying he had finally eaten breakfast.
