Breaking: Police Officer Shoots Colleague Dead after Laughing at Him, Says He Didn't Know How It Happened

  • Sergeant Basharu Alhassan, a policeman attached to Warawa Divisional Police Headquarters in Kano has been shot dead
  • Alhassan was reportedly killed by one of his colleagues, Inspector Ya’u Yakubu, over a disagreement

Kano, Kano state - A police officer identified as Inspector Ya’u Yakubu has reportedly killed his colleague, Sergeant Basharu Alhassan, at Warawa Divisional Police Headquarters in Kano.

Daily Trust reported that the incident has been confirmed by the spokesman of the Kano state police command, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.

Kiyawa said the deceased was rushed to Wudil General Hospital where he was confirmed dead by doctors, The Cable also reported, adding that the incident occurred on Tuesday night, September 7.

He added that the sergeant responsible for Alhassan's death has been arrested.

The police spokesman said the suspect who is currently at the State CID will be subjected to a medical test to ascertain his mental fitness as directed by the state commissioner of police, CP Sama’ila Dikko.

Kiyawa said:

“There was misunderstanding between the two officers and as a result, the Inspector fired a shot at the Sergeant.”
“On our preliminary investigations, the said Inspector said he didn’t even know how he shot his colleague and he could remember that the deceased was laughing at him. So he was out of his sense and committed this act."

He added that the case will be transferred to the state CID for a discrete investigation.

Meanwhile, some unknown gunmen have reportedly killed three police operatives in Umutu, Ukwuani local government area of Delta state.

The operatives were killed about 7.40am on Wednesday, September 8, at a checkpoint along the Obeti/Oliogo Road.

Local sources said the gunmen also set ablaze the patrol vehicle used by the late officers. It was also gathered that the gunmen set the dead operatives ablaze inside the patrol vehicle.

IGP Baba says he became police boss at a very difficult time

In another report, Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has said he took over the reins of the force at a very difficult time.

President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Baba during the height of the insurrection of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in April.

The militants had broken loose at the time burning down police stations and setting prisoners free.
