The former name of this university is the University of Cross River State. It was established in 1991 according to the directive from the Federal Government of Nigeria. The University of UYO inherited staff, students, academic programmes and the entire facilities from the University of Cross River State.

The University of UYO is located in the capital of Akwa Ibom State. It has 12 faculties and the school of continuing education.
