Lawan's political journey began in 1999 when he was elected to the House of Representatives, representing the Bade/Jakusko Constituency. He served in this capacity until 2007, after which he transitioned to the Senate, representing Yobe North. His tenure in the Senate has been marked by various leadership roles, including serving as the Senate Majority Leader from January 10, 2016, to June 6, 2019.
On June 11, 2019, Lawan was elected as the President of the Nigerian Senate, succeeding Abubakar Bukola Saraki. His election was a significant milestone in his political career, reflecting his influence and leadership within the Nigerian legislative framework.
