Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole was born on April 4, 1952, in Iyamho, near Auchi, Edo state, Nigeria. He began his career at Arewa Textiles Company, where he was elected union secretary. In 1975, he pursued further education at Ruskin College, Oxford, studying industrial relations with a focus on labour economics. He also attended the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in 1989, becoming a Member of the National Institute (MNI).
Labour movement leadership
In 1982, Oshiomhole became general secretary of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, representing over 75,000 workers. He rose to national prominence as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) from 1999 to 2007, leading campaigns against fuel price hikes and advocating for workers' rights. His tenure was marked by negotiations with the government, including a 25% wage increase for public sector workers.
Political career
Oshiomhole transitioned into politics, running for Governor of Edo state in 2007 under the Action Congress Party. After legal challenges, he was declared the winner and served from 2008 to 2016, securing re-election in 2012. In 2018, he became national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a position he held until his suspension in 2020. He was elected Senator for Edo North in 2023.
Personal Life
Originally born into a Muslim family, Oshiomhole converted to Christianity, influenced by his late wife, Clara, who passed away in 2010. He remarried in 2015 to Lara Fortes.
In recognition of his service, Oshiomhole was conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2011.
