The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his 70th birthday.

In a post shared on his X page on Sunday, September 14, Obi described the Pope's life as a testament to faith, humility, and courage.
Peter Obi joined Catholics worldwide in celebrating the Pontiff, noting that the significance of his birthday coincides with the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross.
Continuing, the former governor of Anambra state praised the Pope for his leadership, guidance, and service to the Church, and prayed for his continued health and wisdom.

Peter Obi tweeted:
"On this blessed day of your 70th birthday, our beloved Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, I join the Universal Church and all people of goodwill in congratulating you, Holy Father."
Speaking further, Peter Obi further highlighted the Pope’s life as a model of perseverance and faith, saying,
"Your journey through the years has been a living witness to God’s grace, shaping you into a shepherd whose life speaks of faith, humility, and courage.
"As you continue to preside over the Church in communion with the bishops, my heartfelt prayer is that the Lord will keep guiding and guarding you, granting you strength, peace, and joy in the sacred task you carry."

Obi concluded with a prayer for the Pontiff’s continued wellbeing.
Leo XIV makes first outing after election
Previously, Legit.ng reported that Pope Leo XIV made an unannounced visit to a shrine dedicated to Saint Augustine in a small town outside of Rome, where he prayed before a famed icon housed there and met with members of the Augustinian order.
This was Pope Leo's first visit to the community after being elected pontiff on May 8, 2025.

Pope Leo makes key appointment after election as pontiff
Previously, Legit.ng reported that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Sister Tiziana Merletti, former Superior General of the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor, as Secretary of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
The Dicastery is responsible for overseeing religious orders, congregations, and secular institutes within the Catholic Church.
