Tension as Suspected Herdsmen kill 3 in Fresh Benue Attack

Yelwata, Benue State - Suspected armed herders shot three people dead and three others injured in Yelwata village, Guma local government area (LGA) of Benue State.
It was gathered that the gunmen invaded the community as early as 7am on Monday, August 11, 2025.

As reported by The Punch, Yelwata residents blocked the federal highway from Makurdi to Abuja with the corpses.
The protesting youths prevented the movement of vehicles on the highway.

A youth leader from the community, Achii Mathias, confirmed the tragic incident.
“The Fulanis again attacked our community (Yelwata) this morning around 7am and were shooting sporadically, and they killed three people, and three others were injured.
“As I am talking to you now, the Security Adviser to the governor and Chairman of Guma LGA are here assessing the situation.”
The State police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had yet to receive the report.
“The moment I have the report, I will send it to you.”
Protest breaks out in Benue over mass killings
Recall that angry youths on Sunday morning, June 15, blocked Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi, Benue state, halting traffic and stranding commuters travelling between northern and southern Nigeria
The demonstration was sparked by an attack in Yelewata —where over 200 people were reportedly killed by suspected armed herdsmen.
Defying government warnings against unlawful gatherings, the protesters demanded justice and stronger security, accusing authorities of abandoning affected communities.

Armed herdsmen kill 4 Police officers in Benue
In a similar story, Legit.ng reported that suspected armed herdsmen attacked another community in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue state.
The armed killed at least four police officers in the Udei community on Sunday afternoon, June 29, 2025.
The latest attack is coming barely two weeks after over 200 people were killed in the Yelewata community.
