Fake Certificates: List of 107 Private Universities FG Wants to Investigate

  • The Federal Ministry of Education will investigate no fewer than 107 private universities in the country
  • The affected private universities to be probed by the federal government are those established in the last 15 years

FCT, Abuja - The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman has set up a seven-member inter-ministerial committee to investigate 107 private universities established in the last 15 years.

According to The Nation, Mamman gave the directive after launching a probe of degree racketeering in foreign and local private universities on Tuesday, January 9.

The committee, which includes the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Minister of Youths, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, among others will investigate the allegations within eight weeks.

They are to assess whether these institutions have the required facilities, appropriate management structures, adequate funding for programs, and the necessary staff (full-time, contract, adjunct, visiting, among other types).

The newspaper said checks on the National Universities Commission (NUC) website revealed that 107 private universities were established within the last 15 years.

NUC releases updated full list of Illegal universities

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that NUC identified 37 illegal universities operating across the country.

The NUC Acting Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, said the commission has arrested some persons for operating illegal universities in Nigeria.

The NUC secretary disclosed that the Department of State Services (DSS) was involved in the clampdown on illegal institutions in the country He urged parents to check the NUC’s website for illegal and legal varsities in Nigeria so as not to fail victims.

Fake certificates: Universities in Benin, Togo affected by FG's suspension

Legit.ng also reported that no fewer than 45 universities will be affected by the federal government's decision to suspend evaluation and accreditation for degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.

Some of the institutions include Institut Supérieur de Formation Professionnelle (ISFOP), Lakeside University College (LUC) Benin, and African University of Bénin.
