Ramsey Tyson’s identity and their impact on Mike Tyson

Ramsey Tyson identifies as transmasculine and non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, as shared in an interview with Them. In 2020, they inspired Mike Tyson to confront rapper Boosie Badazz, who had made transphobic remarks about Dwyane Wade’s daughter Zaya.

Tyson challenged Boosie on his Hot Boxin’ podcast, asking:

What happened to you that you think that you're somebody that can comment on somebody's life?

The exchange went viral and earned praise, including from Wade, who said he “appreciated” the moment.

Before recording the episode, Tyson’s wife, Lakiha Spicer, asked Ramsey whether Boosie should be removed from the line-up. Ramsey advised against cancelling, believing it could be “a good opportunity to educate someone about trans issues.”

After the podcast, Ramsey spoke to Boosie privately and shared facts about trans children. They explained during the aforementioned Them interview:

I'm a nonbinary person who's socially transitioned amongst my friends and started a medical transition. I felt like I couldn't not say something.

While Ramsey appreciated being credited for inspiring the moment, they later addressed the discomfort of being misgendered during the coverage. Their father had referred to them as his “daughter” in the same Them interview.

It’s very sweet to say that I inspired him in some way... But yeah, it's always a little weird to be misgendered, let alone in Complex…I think it’s much more important to listen to trans people.
