Donald Duke is a Nigerian politician and former governor of Cross River State, known for his progressive leadership and cultural initiatives.

Early Life and Education

Born on September 30, 1961, in Calabar, Duke was the fourth of five children in a family of high-ranking officials. His father, Henry Etim Duke, was the longest-serving Chairman of the Nigerian Customs Service.

Duke received his early education in Lagos, attending schools like Corona and Saint Mary's School. He later attended Unity Schools in Sokoto and Ilorin for his secondary education. He completed his A-levels at the Federal School of Arts and Science in Lagos.

In 1982, he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from Ahmadu Bello University, followed by a law degree from the Nigerian Law School in 1983.

He furthered his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, obtaining a Master's degree in Business Law and Admiralty in 1984.

Political Career and Governance

Duke's political journey began in 1992 when he was appointed Commissioner for Finance and Planning in Cross River State.

In 1999, he was elected Governor of Cross River State, a position he held until 2007. During his tenure, he initiated several development projects, including the Calabar Carnival, which has become one of Africa's largest street parties.

He also launched the Tinapa Resort to boost tourism and business in the state. His administration was noted for urban development, environmental conservation, and promoting democratic values.

Family Life

Donald Duke is married to Onari Duke, a legal practitioner. Together, they have three children. Duke is also known for his passion for jazz music and has held concerts showcasing his musical talents
