APC Strongman Breaks Silence on Whether or Not El-Rufai Is Still With the Party: "Forget Politics"

  • APC chieftain Bashir Jamoh said ex-Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai remains a party member despite joining an ADC-led opposition coalition
  • Jamoh insists the party still sought El-Rufai’s free advice, dismissing claims he has formally quit the APC
  • Northern Youths Frontiers criticised El-Rufai’s recent remarks as divisive and unrepresentative of Northern interests

A senior figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) has insisted that former Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, remains a member of the ruling party.

The politician further noted that despite his recent political moves, including joining an opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he remains a valuable asset to the ruling party.

Bashir Jamoh, a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), made the clarification while speaking to journalists in Kaduna on Thursday, August 7.

APC still consults former governor

Jamoh explained that the Kaduna APC continues to seek El-Rufai’s advice on political matters, stressing that the former governor offers his input freely, Vanguard reported.

“We are yet to reach the point where we will say farewell to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai,” Jamoh said.

He added:

“Forget about the politics. When we need his advice, we consult him, and he offers his contributions free of charge.”

He dismissed suggestions that El-Rufai’s political activities outside the APC meant he had formally left the party.

Political shifts and opposition coalition

El-Rufai was reported to have left the APC a few months ago, citing the alleged lack of internal democracy under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, Guardian reported.

He was later linked to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) before aligning with a coalition of opposition parties that adopted the ADC as its platform.

Despite these developments, Jamoh insisted that the former governor remains a card-carrying APC member in Kaduna state.

Meanwhile, the Northern Youths Frontiers (NYF) has criticised El-Rufai over comments he made during a political gathering in Sokoto, describing them as “divisive, self-serving, and detached from the aspirations of Northern Nigeria.”

In a statement signed by the group’s North West Zonal Coordinator, Saminu Tukur, the NYF said the Senate’s earlier refusal to confirm El-Rufai for a ministerial post, following multiple petitions, was a sign of waning public trust.

“El-Rufai’s veiled threats about 2027 and inflammatory rhetoric amount to a desperate attempt by a politically irrelevant figure to reinsert himself into the national discourse through controversy, divisiveness, and desperation,” Tukur said.

The group added that the former governor’s remarks do not represent the views of Kaduna state or the wider North.

APC replies El-Rufai's criticism

Legit.ng earlier reported that the APC has expressed confidence that Nigerians will again vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Felix Morka, the spokesperson of the party, claimed while responding to the recent criticism of the president by former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Morka explained that El-Rufai and his cronies in the coalition adopted ADC because they did not have a better alternative to President Tinubu's bold economic policies.
