2023: PDP Group Calls on Governor Nyesom Wike to Run for President

  • Governor Nyesom Wike has been urged to contest for the presidency in 2023 by a group of PDP chieftains
  • The party chieftains under a group known as PDP Renaissance Movement, say Nigeria needs a leader like Wike
  • The Rivers state governor has not publicly declared his interest in the much talked about 2023 presidential contest

Calabar - A group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), PDP Renaissance Movement, has called on Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike to run for president in 2023.

The group, made up of serving members of the Cross River state House of Assembly and former commissioners who refused to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with Governor Ben Ayade, said that Nigeria needs somebody like Wike with a vision and mission to turn the economy around.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, November 9 in Calabar, one of the leaders of the group, Gab Odu Oji, said the country needs total revival in all sectors, adding that Wike has character and content that qualifies him to be Nigeria's number one citizen.

Daily Sun newspaper quoted him as saying:

‘‘The movement notes that Nigeria is in dire need of a leader to drive prosperity to the people. Wike is a nationalist who believes in the unity of Nigeria and this was demonstrated during the inferno at Sokoto.
‘‘This is the worst time and we have had recessions and this is what zoning has done to this country. So, we are out to right these wrongs by bringing Wike as the saviour we are looking for to salvage us.’’

Speaking on zoning, Moses Onor, one of the group's leaders said:

‘‘Stakeholders of the party met and threw away zoning so this is the position of the party and we stand by it.’’

He said the PDP Renaissance Movement is interested in a man who has character and content and the Rivers state governor possesses the qualities.

On his part, Asu Okang, another leader of the group, said there are a lot of wrongs going on in the country, adding that Governor Wike can fix the situation if he becomes president.

2023: Women Support Group Declares Support for Chibuike Amaechi

In a related development, a women support group, Coalition for Progress and Continuity (CPC), led by Princess Sandra Onoja has declared support for Wike's predecessor and minister for transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, as the next president of the country.

The women group stated that Amaechi has extensive experience as a legislator, state governor, and federal minister.

According to the group, the positions occupied by Amaechi in the past and at present has sufficiently equipped him for the challenges ahead as a president.

Anyim Pius Anyim declares interest in 2023 presidency

On his part, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim has declared that he will contest for presidency in 2023.

Anyim, a former Senate president, said he will contest for the position whether his party - the Peoples Democratic Party will zone the presidential ticket to the southeast or not.

The Ebonyi-born politician says he has ignored calls for him to run for office in the past, but he is now ready to take a shot at the seat.
