Lady shares reason for quitting church

The lady, identified on TikTok as @zobaetom, explained that although she still believes in God and teaches her children to live righteously, she no longer places her faith in church institutions.

According to her, her disconnection from church life was linked to an incident that happened during her teenage years in Lagos, when her mother was an active and generous member of their congregation.

She recalled that her mother had been a thriving businesswoman who sold food and drinks in the community.

At the time, both mother and daughter were deeply committed to the church and attended nearly every programme, from vigils to deliverance services.

Her mother was known for her generosity, consistently paying her tithe, donating materials for the construction of the church building, and even giving loans to the pastor to support the ministry.

Due to her commitment, she was appointed the women's leader and was known for organising visits and financial support for sick members.

However, their relationship with the church took a painful turn when her mother fell ill with a kidney condition.

Despite informing the church of her health situation, no member came to visit or offer any kind of help.

The lady said her mother spent over six months in the hospital, during which all her finances were drained in an effort to survive, yet none of the people she once supported showed concern.

When her mother eventually passed away, she personally called the pastor to deliver the news, but he simply responded that he was driving and would call back.

According to her, six years had passed since that conversation and the pastor never reached out again.

The painful experience, she said, completely changed her perception on religious commitment, and while she still believes in God, she vowed never to give her time and energy to any church again.

In her words:

"This is why I don't really take going to church every Sunday seriously. I really want to start, oh, but I can't seem to because of what happened to my mom few years ago. Few years ago, when I was around 14 or so, my mom and I started attending this church in Lagos. We loved the church, and I personally participated in a lot of activities. I don't think we missed any of their programs, anointing service, oh, deliverance night, oh, vigil, oh, we used to attend all of them, except when I go back to school because I was in boarding school.

"My mom was a successful business woman, actually, she sold drinks, meat, pepper soup, fish pepper soup, and she was well known in the area. But let us focus on the church for now. My mom paid her tithe diligently and contributed massively to the development of that church. The pastor will always say that to get many blessings from Lord, that we have to build the house of the Lord, because that time, the church was still under development. My mom bought blocks, she bought sand, she bought stones, she contributed a whole lot to the building of that church. I know for sure, the contributions that she made, and the loans that she gave to the pastor, has, she was even made the woman president of the church, and there was no sick person in that church that my mommy does not organize visitation for, and even contribute money so that the person can get better.
"Few years later, my mom fell sick, she developed issues with her kidney, ah, we spent and spent on her, my mommy went broke because all the money was going to her health, and of course, the church knew because we informed them. My mommy spent over 6 months at the hospital, and not a single member of that church came to visit her, no one, nobody supported her financially, nobody came to visit her in the hospital. Oh, please don't even say the church does not owe her anything, that no one forced her to do all those contributions, the church actually owe her a lot. The pastor did, the members did, aside money, said that they owe her visiting her at the hospital, at least it will not remove anything, at least to visit her and pray for her at the hospital, but nobody came.
"My mommy died, I personally called the pastor on phone to inform him of my mommy's death, and this was the conversation: good morning sir, he was like, who is speaking? I told him, sir, it is me, the daughter of OP, I'm coming to inform you that my mom has passed away, and we are currently preparing to bury her. Guess what he said, said okay, I will call you back, I am currently driving. 6 good years, and guess what, he's still driving up till now, he never called back. The church that she gave her all, abandoned her, that changed my view on religion totally. I do not take churches seriously, I just hope I heal, but me personally, yes, I believe in God, but she is still dedicating my time and energy to a church, I will never do such a thing."
