28-Year-Old Mechanic Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Stealing Yams Worth N35,000

  • A mechanic in Osun state, who reportedly stole tubers of yams due to hunger, would spend three years in prison
  • The 28-year-old reportedly stole tubers of yams worth N35,000, pleaded guilty to the one-count charge bothering on theft, when he was arraigned by the police before the Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court

A 28-year-old auto mechanic, Akeem Jimoh, has bagged a three-year jail term for stealing some 17 tubers of yams worth N35,000 in Osun state.

Jimoh pleaded guilty to theft

Jimoh admitted to committing the crime when he appeared before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court, the Osun state capital, on Wednesday, September 3.

As reported by The Punch, Jimoh stole 17 tubers of yams behind Africa Primary School, Ataoja Area in Osogbo, on July 25, 2025.

After listening to his charge, the defendant, Jimoh, who had no legal representation, pleaded guilty to the one-count charge bothering on theft, slammed against him by the police, The Punch reported.

The charge read:

“That you, Jimoh Akeem ‘M’, on the 27th July, 2025, at about 10:00pm at the back of Africa Primary School, Ataoja Area, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did steal 17 tubers of yam valued the sum of #35,000.00 (Thirty-Five Thousand Naira only), property of one Tiamiyu Abegunde ‘M’, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390 (9) of Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11 Law of Osun State of Nigeria 2003.”

Why I committed the act - Jimoh, an ex-convict speaks

Why asked why he committed the act, Jimoh told the court that he stole the items due to hunger, and pleaded for leniency.

Addressing the court, the police prosecutor, Babatunde Olukokun, said in the confessional statement that Jimoh wrote after his arrest, he said he had previously served a three-year jail term, after the man he stood surety for jumped bail.

Jimoh to serve 3 years jail term without fine

Delivering her ruling, the presiding magistrate, Muibah Olatunji, sentenced Jimoh to a 3-year jail term with hard labour and without the option of a fine.

Similarly, Legit.ng reported that Segun Olowookere, the 31-year-old reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun state for stealing fowls, said he surrendered himself to the police when they came looking for him in April 2010.
