Jubilation as Nigerian Governor Approves N70,000 Minimum Wage

Calabar, Cross River state - Governor Bassey Otu-led the Cross River State government has approved N70,000 national minimum wage to workers in the state.
Head of Service, Dr. Innocent Eteng, said the implemented national minimum wage is according to the agreement reached with organised labour.

As reported by The Punch, Eteng made this known to newsmen on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, in Calabar, the state capital.
Legit.ng recalls that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill into law, further confirming his approval of N70,000 for Nigerian workers.
Eteng stated that the Otu administration graciously implemented the minimum wage as written in the agreement.
After unveiling the programme of activity to mark the ongoing Civil/Public Service Day celebration, Eteng said:
“His Excellency has graciously approved the N70,000 minimum wage, which we have implemented as written in the agreement.
“Those saying the governor has not implemented the minimum wage are ignorant and naive. As the Head of Service, I talk to you authoritatively. I am giving you information which is bankable and can be taken to the bank.
“I am saying that minimum wage across the state, across all levels, has been implemented to the latter. So commend the governor, His Excellency, for doing that.”
Labour pushes for a minimum wage increase in 2025
Recall that the N70,000 minimum wage adopted by the federal government in 2024 after consultation with organised labour will be reviewed periodically.
Legit.ng reports that the N70,000 amount appears to depict the present position of the labour unions.
However, the good thing about it is that organised labour will not wait for another five years to come for a review.

Minimum wage: States set to meet implementation deadline
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Labour said it is hopeful that Nigerian governors will pay the arrears and the new minimum wage.
According to labour, payment of the new wage "is a function of the law, and it must take effect."
In an interview, NLC official, Hakeem Ambali, expressed his belief that all governors will honour the 2024 agreement "in the best interest of industrial peace and harmony”
