NUC Lists 58 Fake Universities Operating Illegally in Nigeria

  • The National Universities Commission (NUC) has identified 58 fake universities currently operating illegally across Nigeria
  • It has also launched investigations into eight additional institutions suspected of running unauthorised degree programmes
  • The commission warned that certificates from these unapproved entities are invalid and pose serious risks to students

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the operations of 58 fake universities currently running illegally across Nigeria.

The regulatory body stated that these institutions are not accredited and have been operating without approval, thereby putting unsuspecting students at risk of obtaining invalid degrees.

In a public notice, the NUC declared:

“For the avoidance of doubt, anybody who patronises or obtains any certificate from any of these illegal institutions does so at his or her own risk.”

The commission confirmed that appropriate law enforcement agencies have been notified of necessary action.

The NUC listed the following institutions as fake universities operating illegally in Nigeria:

In addition to the 58 fake universities, the NUC revealed that eight other institutions are currently under investigation for allegedly running unauthorised degree programmes.

3. Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University

4. Richmond Open University, Arochukwu, Abia state

5. West Coast University, Umuahia

6. Saint Clements University, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti state

7. Volta University College, Aba, Abia state

8. Illegal Satellite Campuses of Ambrose Alli University

List of federal universities Tinubu approved in 2025

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the establishment of five new federal universities across Nigeria in 2025, marking a significant expansion in the country’s tertiary education sector.
