According to the JAMB Brochure, Nigerian universities and colleges of art offer Linguistics as a stand-alone course. Others offer the course as a combination, such as Igbo/Linguistics, Linguistics/Edo, Linguistics/Yoruba, or Linguistics/Urhobo. Another common combination course is Language and Linguistics.

Linguistics

Linguistics is offered in more than twenty public and private universities in Nigeria. These include Benue State University, University of Abuja, Afe Babalola University, and Adekunle Ajasin University.

These universities require Direct Entry candidates to have two A-Level passes or NCE credits in any language, preferably an African language. On the other hand, UTME candidates must have five credit passes, including the English language.

Linguistics and African Languages

Linguistics/Edo is offered at the University of Benin (UNIBEN). The university requires candidates to have an O-level pass in English language for UTME candidates with a distinction in literature in English. This subject combination includes a Nigerian language, preferably Edo. Mathematics is optional for this course.

Linguistics/Igbo is offered as a course at Imo State University, University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Obafemi Awolowo University. DE candidates are generally accepted with two A-level passes in Igbo and an arts or social science subject, or an NCE in Igbo with an arts subject.

Linguistics and Yoruba are offered at Obafemi Awolowo University and Adekunle Ajasin University as a single course. To gain admission, candidates must have five O-level credit passes in the English language, one arts subject, and three subjects in sciences and social sciences.

Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), offers Linguistics and Urhobo. UTME subjects at the university include literature in English.

The University of Maiduguri offers a selection of African and foreign languages as options for the Linguistics course. These include Kanuri, Fulfulde, French, Arabic, and English. To gain admission as a UTME candidate, you will need to have any of the above languages along with two other subjects.

Linguistics and Communication Studies

This course is offered at Abia State University (ABSU) and the University of Calabar. Its subject requirements are similar to those needed in Linguistics as a course.
