How Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) assign their regional digits

Perhaps you may be wondering how the NIPOST came up with their naming system. How different is it from your country or any other country you know? The country has six geopolitical zones consisting of 36 states, but NIPOST classified the nation into nine regions. Each region has a code (1-9) which represents the first number. Combine the digit with the other two to form the first three digits of the delivery district. The last three numbers represent the delivery location, to make up the six numerical digits. The delivery location or destination of the package can be a post office, rural, or an urban area.

For example,

The postal code of Ogun state is 110001. It means that all digits in Ogun begin with the number 110. The other three numbers denote the destination of the package.

Agbomeji is an area in Abeokuta city in Ogun state. The zip code of Agbomeji is 110271, hence,

  • 110 denotes of Ogun state
  • 271 represents the delivery location of the package

You now know the Abeokuta postal code which will come in handy when sending your package to someone in the city. Postal service is one of the oldest means of sending letters or parcels to people across the world. The modern technology has, however, reduced the number of users of the traditional system. Despite this, it remains one of the best and most trusted means in many places in the world.
