Early Life and Education

Tobi Amusan was born on April 23, 1997, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria. She is the youngest of three siblings in a family where both parents were school teachers. Amusan attended Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode. She later moved to the United States for higher education, enrolling at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), where she studied and competed as a collegiate athlete.

Career

Amusan began her athletic career focusing on sprinting before transitioning to hurdles. She gained international attention in 2015 by winning gold in the 100m hurdles at the African Junior Championships and the African Games. In 2016, she broke the 13-second barrier in the 100m hurdles, setting a new UTEP record.

Her career highlights include:

Setting the world record of 12.12 seconds in the 100m hurdles semi-final at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Winning gold in the 100m hurdles at the 2022 World Championships, becoming the first Nigerian world champion in an athletics event.

Securing multiple titles in the Diamond League, Commonwealth Games, African Championships, and African Games.
