Bayo Onanuga was born on June 20, 1957, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state, Nigeria. He began his education at Moslem Primary School in Ijebu Ode (1962–1969) and proceeded to Muslim College, Ijebu Ode, completing his secondary education in 1974. He attended Federal Government College, Odogbolu, for his A-Levels from 1975 to 1977. In 1977, Onanuga was admitted to the University of Lagos, where he graduated in 1980 with a degree in Mass Communication.
Journalism career
Onanuga's journalism career commenced in 1982 at the Ogun State Television Authority (OGTVA). In 1983, he joined The Guardian newspaper in Lagos as a sub-editor. He later worked with the National Concord as a senior features writer and became the international editor of African Concord magazine in 1989, based in London. In April 1992, Onanuga resigned from African Concord after refusing to apologise to military dictator General Ibrahim Babangida over a controversial cover story, an act that underscored his commitment to journalistic integrity.
In February 1993, Onanuga co-founded TheNews Magazine alongside colleagues Seye Kehinde, Dapo Olorunyomi, and others. The magazine gained prominence for its fearless reporting during Nigeria’s military era. Even when The News was shut down by the regime, Onanuga and his team launched TEMPO magazine and P.M. NEWS in 1994, continuing their mission for a free press.
Political engagement and public service
Onanuga ventured into politics in 2014, declaring his candidacy for the Ogun East senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Although he did not win, his candidacy demonstrated his commitment to public service.
In May 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Onanuga as the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), where he oversaw the agency’s operations and modernisation efforts.
In October 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Onanuga as Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. In this role, he provides strategic counsel on communication and media-related matters, leveraging his extensive experience to support the administration's objectives.
Challenges during military rule
During General Sani Abacha’s dictatorship, Onanuga faced significant challenges, including detention by the State Security Service. He escaped captivity and went into exile, returning to Nigeria in 1998 after Abacha’s death. His return marked a renewed commitment to democracy and free speech.
Personal life
Bayo Onanuga is married to Toyin Machado-Onanuga. The couple maintains a private family life, reflecting Onanuga’s preference for keeping his public career distinct from personal affairs.
