Labour Party National Chairman Physically Attacked, Details Surface

The Labour Party has condemned an alleged physical attack on its national chairman, Julius Abure. The party said a woman identified as Precious Oruche, popularly referred to as Mama P, attacked Abure at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The Labour Party said the incident happened on Friday, September 26, and attributed it to some anti-democratic element.

How Abure was assaulted at Abuja airport

A statement from Obiora Ifoh, the spokesperson of the Labour Party, on Saturday, September 27, explained that the national chairman was standing quietly in line for the Max Air flight en route to Benin when Mama P suddenly pounced on him.

Ifoh further explained that Mama P did not stop the confrontation while on board and that she ignored the flight attendants' pleas to calm down the situation. The statement also claimed that she even continued after the flight landed in Benin, the Edo state capital.

The statement further explained that the security operatives at the Benin airport had to take the Labour Party national chairman to safety before the woman was handed over to the police.

He explained that the party was shocked when the woman released a video allegedly boasting of her connections in the country.

The Labour Party has been in a leadership crisis since the outcome of the 2023 general election. Abure faction has not been aligning with its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Labour Party suspends Governor Otti, lawmakers

Earlier in May 2025, the Labour Party leadership crisis took a new dimension as Governor Otti was suspended over allegations of anti-party activities. For the same reason, the party also announced the suspension of five federal lawmakers elected on the platform of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections.

The affected federal lawmakers included Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi. Julius Abure-led faction of the party's national secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, announced the suspension of the governor and the federal lawmakers in a statement on Wednesday, May 7.

On Friday, May 2, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the faction set up a five-man disciplinary committee chaired by its deputy national chairman, Ayo Olorunfem, the factional national secretary, Ibrahim and three other members.

The committee is saddled with the responsibility of investigating the Abia state governor and other members of the party over the alleged anti-party activities.

Obi ex-campaign chief dumps Labour Party

Legit.ng earlier reported that Oseloka Obaze, a prominent figure in Anambra politics and former Secretary to the State Government, has tendered his resignation from the Labour Party (LP), citing a loss of confidence in the party’s national leadership and internal processes.

In a formal letter addressed to the party chairman in his Ochuche Ward 406, Ogbaru Local Government Area, Obaze stated that he could no longer align himself with a party that has “repeatedly failed” to uphold democratic values.
