On September 2nd 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the reinstatement of Mr Salihu Abdullahi Dembos as Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), reversing recent management changes within the state-owned broadcaster.

Dembos was originally appointed to the position by President Tinubu in October 2023.

The President also ordered the return of Mr Ayo Adewuyi as Executive Director of News at NTA. Adewuyi, whose appointment was made in 2024, is expected to serve out his full term, which concludes in 2027.

NTA appointments reversed by presidential directive

The directive from the Presidency effectively nullified the previously announced appointments of a new director-general, executive director of news, executive director of marketing, and managing director of NTA Enterprises.

No further details were provided regarding the rationale behind the reversal, though the move signals a reaffirmation of continuity within the NTA’s leadership structure.

Observers noted that the decision depicted President Tinubu’s commitment to honouring existing tenures and maintaining stability within key federal institutions.

The announcement, made public by Mr Onanuga, has drawn attention across media and governance circles, with implications for the broader landscape of public broadcasting in Nigeria.

What is NTA?

The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) is Nigeria’s national public broadcaster, established in 1977 following the merger of regional television stations under federal control.

Headquartered in Abuja, NTA operates the largest television network in Nigeria and is widely regarded as the “authentic voice” of the Nigerian government.

Its mandate includes informing, educating, and entertaining the public while promoting national unity and cultural integration.

Over the years, NTA has played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s media landscape, offering a mix of news, educational content, and entertainment across its numerous regional stations.

Despite facing criticism for perceived government bias and increasing competition from private broadcasters and digital platforms, NTA remains a central fixture in Nigerian broadcasting.

Its programming often reflects government policies and national priorities, making it a key channel for public communication.
