Presidency Reacts to Buhari’s Passing, Orders VP Shettima on What to Do

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced on Sunday the death of former Nigerian leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London at approximately 4:30 pm, following a prolonged illness.

The sombre news was delivered through Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, in an official statement dated 13 June 2025.

Nigeria mourns former President Buhari’s passing

According to the announcement, President Tinubu personally spoke with Mrs Aishat Buhari, widow of the late President, to extend his heartfelt condolences. He also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom in order to accompany President Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

As a mark of national respect, President Tinubu ordered that flags across the country be flown at half-staff.

Buhari’s legacy, from military rule to civilian presidency

Muhammadu Buhari held office as Nigeria’s elected President twice, securing victory in the 2015 and 2023 elections. His political journey also included serving as the nation’s military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.

Buhari’s long-standing role in Nigeria’s governance has left a lasting imprint on the country’s political landscape.
