2023: Shekarau Officially Defects to PDP After Three Months Political Romance With NNPP

  • Senator Ibrahim Shakarau has defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the Peoples Democratic Party
  • Shekarau joined the NNPP in May 2022 after defecting from the All Progressives Congress on the platform of which he won a Senate seat
  • He was formally received into the PDP by the 2023 party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu

Kano - A former governor of Kano state, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has formally announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This is coming barely three months after Shekarau defected to NNPP from the All Progressives Congress.

Daily Trust newspaper reports that Shekarau made the declaration on Monday, August 29 at his Mundubawa home in Kano.

He was formally received into the PDP by the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and the party’s national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, among other bigwigs.

Shekarau also said he had written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to announce his withdrawal from the senatorial race for Kano central under the NNPP.

Other PDP bigwigs in attendance include the party’s vice presidential candidate and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa; governors of Sokoto and Taraba, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Darius Ishaku.

Others are former Vice President, Namadi Sambo, the chairman of the BOT of the party, former governors of Jigawa (Saminu Turaki and Sule Lamido), Sokoto (Attahiru Bafarawa), Kaduna (Ahmed Makarfi), Adamawa (Boni Haruna), among others.

2023: Peter Obi’s meetings with Wike, Soludo reportedly unsettles Atiku’s camp

Meanwhile, the recent meeting between Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra state and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has sent jitters to the camp of Atiku and the PDP.

This is coming days after Obi had a closed-door meeting with some PDP governors led by Wike in Port Harcourt.

In Atiku's camp, it is feared that the meetings may affect the political fortunes of the PDP presidential candidate negatively.

On his part, prominent Nigerian Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, says he feels pity for Nigeria’s next president.

In an article he wrote and seen by Legit.ng, Gumi said the next commander-in-chief has to act “quickly and carefully” when he assumes office.

The prominent cleric warned that if the country's next president treat terrorism with kid gloves, the insurgency will get worse.
