The UK government has outlined six key restrictions that apply to foreign nationals who enter the country on a Marriage Visitor visa, with the rules drawing attention from people planning to wed a partner in the United Kingdom.

According to the UK government's official guidance, the Marriage Visitor visa is designed for individuals who wish to get married or register a civil partnership in the UK but do not intend to remain in the country afterwards.

What the Marriage Visitor Visa Does Not Allow

While the visa permits the holder to marry or enter into a civil partnership at a licensed venue within six months of arriving in the UK, it comes with a firm set of prohibitions.

Foreign partners on this visa cannot:

- Claim public funds or benefits

- Bring dependants into the UK — family members must apply for their own visas separately

- Live in the UK by making frequent repeated visits

- Extend the visa or switch to a different visa category while in the country

- Work, except for activities directly connected to their existing job or business overseas, such as attending a scheduled meeting

- Study

The restrictions make clear that the visa is strictly a short-term arrangement, with no pathway for the holder to transition into a longer-term immigration status from within the UK.

UK shares 1 type of visa that can fast track permanent residency status

Not everyone planning a UK wedding requires this visa. Irish citizens, those with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, and those who have a pending EU Settlement Scheme application are all exempt. Anyone who qualifies for British citizenship, including through dual nationality, must pursue that route instead rather than applying for the Marriage Visitor visa.

Applicants must submit their application before travelling to the UK, and the earliest they can do so is three months ahead of their intended travel date.

After applying online, they are required to attend a visa application centre in person to provide biometric information, including fingerprints and a photograph.

The nearest centre may be located in a different country from where the applicant resides.

The government notes that a faster decision may be available for an additional fee, though standard processing takes up to three weeks.
