Benin, Edo state - Tension gripped the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Sunday night after unidentified gunmen reportedly shot and killed a student near the institution’s main gate at Ugbowo, Edo state.
The victim, whose identity had yet to be confirmed as of press time, was reportedly attacked while driving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle out of the campus.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, believed to be masked men, opened fire on the student at close range before fleeing the scene immediately after the attack, Punch reported.
Victim had reportedly finished examination
Sources within the university community disclosed that the deceased had reportedly completed an examination at the Department of Political Science about an hour before the incident occurred.
The development triggered panic among students and residents around the campus area, with many expressing fears over rising insecurity, Vanguard reported.
One student who witnessed the aftermath of the incident said the attack appeared deliberate and deadly.
“They shot him at close range, and there was no way he could have survived the attack,” the student said.
Two others injured in attack
Two other occupants of the vehicle reportedly survived the attack but sustained injuries during the shooting.
The injured victims were said to have been rushed to the University of Benin Health Centre for emergency treatment.
“Two others who were in the vehicle were also injured and rushed to the school’s health care centre,” the eyewitness added.
Police begin investigation
Operatives from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters later arrived at the scene and evacuated the remains of the deceased student.
The Divisional Police Officer, identified simply as SP Emmanuel, confirmed the incident but said details surrounding the attack were still unclear.
According to him, security operatives had commenced preliminary investigations into the killing.
As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
Fresh security concerns emerge on campus
The killing came barely a day after another student reportedly escaped an attack by suspected assailants armed with machetes around the Social Science Lecture Theatre within the university.
The latest incidents have heightened concerns among students over security within and around the UNIBEN campus.
