FG’s Agency Predicts 3-Day Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall in Over 10 States, Lists Them All

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a comprehensive weather outlook predicting thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across various regions of Nigeria from Thursday through Saturday.

The forecast, released on Wednesday in Abuja, highlighted a heightened risk of flooding in several states.

According to NiMet, morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains were expected on Thursday across parts of Borno, Kebbi, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, and Taraba States. The agency stated, “Later during the afternoon to evening hours, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba and Adamawa States.”

NiMet warned of a high possibility of flooding in Zamfara, Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, and Taraba States during the forecast period.

Central Nigeria to experience intermittent rains and flood risk

In the central region, NiMet projected thunderstorms with intermittent rains over Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Niger States during Thursday morning. The afternoon and evening hours were expected to bring moderate rains to the FCT, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi States.

“There is high possibility of flood occurring over parts of Nasarawa and Benue state during the forecast period,“ the agency stated.

Southern Nigeria forecast: Light to moderate rains with Flood alerts

NiMet predicted cloudy skies over the southern region on Thursday morning, with light rains expected in Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States. Moderate rainfall was forecast later in the day across Oyo, Osun, Edo, Ondo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States.

The agency noted a high possibility of flooding in Cross River State during the forecast period.

Friday weather outlook: Continued thunderstorms and flood warnings

On Friday, NiMet anticipated morning thunderstorms with moderate rains in Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Taraba, Yobe, Borno, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Zamfara States. Thunderstorms were expected to persist into the afternoon and evening across most parts of the northern region.

The agency warned of potential flooding in Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, and Bauchi States.

In the central region, morning thunderstorms with moderate rains were forecast for the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi States. Light rains were expected later in the day in the same areas.

“There is high possibility of flooding occurring over parts of Benue, Niger, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory during the forecast period,” NiMet stated.

Southern region to see persistent rainfall through Friday

NiMet projected light morning rains in Oyo, Ogun, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Imo, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, and Lagos States. The rains were expected to continue later in the day across Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Bayelsa States.

Saturday forecast, thunderstorms and flood alerts persist

Saturday’s forecast indicated morning thunderstorms with moderate rains in Katsina, Kebbi, Kaduna, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Taraba, and Sokoto States. The weather was expected to intensify later in the day in Katsina, Kebbi, Kaduna, Borno, Bauchi, Yobe, Taraba, and Sokoto States.

NiMet warned of a high possibility of flooding in Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States.

In the central region, light rains were anticipated in Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, and the FCT during the morning hours.

NiMet releases weather forecast, advises Nigerians

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a fresh weather forecast, predicting sunshine and haziness across the country from Saturday, January 18, to Monday, January 20.

NiMet released the new weather forecast on Friday, January 17. The outlook envisages sunny skies on Sunday in a hazy atmosphere over the northern regions over the next three days.
