PAPSD Warns Against House of Reps’ Overreach, Calls for Adherence to Constitutional Limits
The Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development (PAPSD) has issued a stern warning against the House of Representatives’ attempt to summon the Governors of Benue and Zamfara states, questioning the legality and implications of such actions.
The group, in a press release dated 5th May 2025, cautioned that such a move violates the constitution and could set a dangerous precedent that undermines the principles of federalism and separation of powers.

PAPSD Emphasises the Principle of Separation of Powers
PAPSD called on the House of Representatives to operate within the boundaries set by the Constitution, which enshrines the principle of separation of powers between the three arms of government.
According to the group, the Constitution grants specific investigative powers to the National Assembly under Sections 88 and 89, but these powers are meant to address federal matters such as corruption or misuse of public funds, not internal state affairs.
“It is against the spirit and letter of the Constitution for the House of Representatives to summon state governors or assembly leaders over matters that are within the exclusive jurisdiction of state governments,” the statement read.
The group added that such actions, if allowed, could result in political chaos and undermine the delicate balance of power that ensures stability in the country.
Concerns Over the Motivations Behind the Petition
The PAPSD also expressed concerns about the motivations behind the petition submitted by the civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and the Rule of Law, which called for the takeover of the functions of the Benue and Zamfara State Assemblies.
The PAPSD highlighted the political nature of the petition, suggesting that it was driven by political opponents seeking to destabilise these states ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The petition to the House of Representatives is a politically motivated move, aimed at undermining democratically elected leaders and their institutions. These actions are not driven by genuine concern for the welfare of the people, but by the desire to score cheap political points,” PAPSD said.
PAPSD Calls for Judicial Redress and Respect for Democracy
In its conclusion, PAPSD urged citizens who felt aggrieved by government actions or policies to seek redress through the courts, rather than through unconstitutional and disruptive means.
The group stressed that Nigeria’s democracy could only thrive if due process was followed and all arms of government operated within their constitutional limits.
“Democracy works when citizens engage in peaceful dialogue and respect the rule of law. It is the essence of democracy that aggrieved citizens should approach the court to challenge government actions,” said Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, the Executive Director of PAPSD.
The statement concluded with a call for all stakeholders to avoid actions that could lead to political upheaval, asserting that Nigeria must safeguard its hard-earned democracy by ensuring that all government institutions follow due process.
