Bandits are Living in a Fool's Paradise: Buhari Condemns Sokoto Killings

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, November 16, warned bandits against thinking that they cannot be crushed.

Buhari made the remark in South Africa in reaction to the killing of 15 people by bandits in Goronyo and Illela local government areas of Sokoto state.

While condemning the incident, the president said his regime will not abandon Nigerians to their fate in the face of the existential challenge caused by banditry.

In a statement by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, and shared on Facebook, Buhari stated that needless and mindless violence against innocent people cannot go unpunished.

Buhari was quoted as saying:

“This administration will not tolerate this state of affairs where criminals deprive the people of their means of livelihoods and turn them into beggars and refugees. The bandits are living in a fool's paradise if they believe that they can't be crushed. The criminals cannot be lucky always; they will ultimately meet their Waterloo. Evil cannot triumph over good no matter how long it takes.”

According to the president, Nigeria is taking delivery of military equipment to improve the capacity of security forces to effectively deal with banditry.

Again, bandits attack 2 local government areas in Sokoto, kill 15 people

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that fifteen people were killed in a fresh attack by some yet to be identified bandits operating in Sokoto state.

The bandits were said to have launched an attack in two different local government areas of the state between Sunday night and Monday, November 15, morning.

The governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal, who confirmed the attack said the two local government areas affected are Goronyo and Illela LGAs.

Nigerian lawmakers react to killings in Sokoto state

Also, lawmakers of the Ninth Senate had observed a minute silence for the victims of bandits' attack at Goronoyo Market in Sokoto state.

The lawmakers were informed about the incident by their colleague Senator Ibrahim Gobir through a point of order made during the commencement of the plenary.

Gobir also told his colleagues that residents in various communities in the state now pay taxes between N1 million to N20 million to the bandits to avoid being attacked.
