Adekunle Gold is opening up about one of the most emotional songs of his career.
The Nigerian singer, who is set to release his sixth studio album, Fuji, on October 3, revealed that a track on the project was once submitted to Beyoncé’s team for her Lion King project.
That song, Simile, means “rest on me” in Yoruba.
The singer recalled the moment in 2019 when his manager pushed him to get back into the studio. It should have been a career-defining opportunity, but Beyoncé’s team wanted him to write.

Instead, it was one of the darkest moments of his life. He had just lost his father.
He wrote:
“Grief has a way of numbing even your senses. I don’t remember if it was morning or night, sunny or rainy. My whole world had collapsed.”
Still, he forced himself into his small Lagos studio one day.
Picking up his microphone, he poured out every ounce of pain he carried. What came out was Simile—a song so raw, he admitted he secretly hoped Beyoncé’s team wouldn’t take it.
Though he sent the song in, Adekunle Gold said he knew deep down that Simile was not meant for anyone else.
He stated:
“It was more than a song—it was my cry for direction. I knew it had a home with me.”
When Beyoncé’s team eventually passed on the track, Gold described feeling relief rather than disappointment.
It was a chance to hold onto a piece of himself that was too sacred to give away. Even before the full album drops, fans have been reacting to his story online, praising the vulnerability behind his words.
