Super Eagles Legend Finidi George Reveals his Mistake Made him Miss Winning UCL with Real Madrid

Finidi George no doubt is one of Nigeria's most successful players in history but to every wins there have been many fails in his career.

The former winer who recently clocked 50-year-old claimed he would have been a part of the Real Madrid squad in 1998 that recaptured the Champions League because he made a hasty decision in leaving Ajax in 1996.

The Super Eagles legend became the first Nigerian to have won the elite competition with the Amsterdam outfit alongside Kanu Nwankwo.

According to the ex-Real Betis star, he fell out of favour with former Ajax boss Louis Van Gaal after granting an interview immediately after the Champions League final loss to Juventus in 1996.

Finidi claimed he was asked by reporters about what the future holds for him at the club and he responded by saying "this is football, anything can happen."

The former Nigerian international was demoted to the bench the following season and compatriot Tijani Babangida was given the nod to start ahead of him.

During the transfer window, several clubs came calling for Finidi including Spanish giants Real Madrid, but he claimed Los Blancos had exceeded their budget and would come and get him in January.

Finidi stated that he got impatient sitting on the bench and forced a move to La Liga outfit Real Betis which he somehow regrets.

"I would have been among the Real Madrid squad that won the 1997 Champions League but because of my impatience.
"Real was among the teams that wanted to sign me but my agent told me they would be coming back for me in the January window that they had exceeded their budget.
"I grew impatient the more as Tijani Babangida took my place in the team and I spoke to my agent that any team will do and that was how I joined Real Betis."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Finidi George got the best 50th birthday gift he could have ever imagined when he former Ajax teammates compiled a video wishing him well on his golden jubilee celebration.

The Super Eagles legend was congratulated by his teammates he won the 1994 Champions League as well as their former coach Louis Van Gaal.
