- Nigeria's lead opposition party, PDP, has reacted to the visit of some APC governors to ex-President Jonathan
- According to the PDP, the APC governors' visit is a form of apology to Jonathan over the alleged lies they peddled against him in 2015
- The opposition party also claimed the visit is a testament to the success of its administration between 1999 and 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clashed with the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the recent visit of some leaders of the ruling party to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The APC governors, led by Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe state and caretaker chairman of the APC, Mai Mala Buni with other party stalwarts visited Jonathan on Friday, November 20.
Other APC chieftains at the meeting include the governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi and his Kebbi state counterpart, Atiku Bagudu.
Though the visit coincided with the 63rd birthday of Jonathan, there are speculations that it had to do with the political permutations ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Nigerian Tribune reported.
Reacting on Sunday, November 22, the PDP claimed that the visit amounted to an apology by the APC to the opposition party for allegedly peddling lies in its desperate move to grab power in 2015.
A statement by the PDP spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the visit affirms the success of the PDP while in government in the country for 16 years.
Jonathan governed Nigeria on the platform of the PDP between 2009 and 2015.
Nigerians react to PDP's statement
Reacting to the PDP's allegations on Facebook, Billy Parker said:
"The truth is gradually coming out. PDP is right. Only a mischievous individual would disagree with your assertion"
Muazu Sadiq said:
"Former President Jonathan is a respected Statesman and visiting him should not be politicized by PDP...
"There are obviously more important things the opposition party should talk about that will please Nigerians"
Ashemfa Danjuma Andenira commented:
"It doesn't matter, let anything that would make this country better be done. The suffering because of APC this and PDP that is not in any way helping the masses."
Mark Olise said:
"So, Obasanjo deserves visits from rival politicians without PDP claiming credit, but with Jonathan, the situation is different?"
Christopher Oladipupo said:
"Indeed and infact the visit is an act of apologizing in disguise, after series of lies against the party and blame trading."
Meanwhile, an earlier report indicated that the APC is allegedly trying to convince a former president Jonathan, to run for president on its platform in 2023.
The report claimed that some leaders of the party have been pressuring the former president to consider the offer.
It was also alleged that President Buhari’s allies believe that Jonathan would be harmless to their group interest and as such the right person to take over if power were to shift to the South.
