Why Abia will give Buhari over 90% votes - APC chieftain

- An APC chieftain in Abia, Austin Meregini, said the people of the state will give President Buhari over 90% votes in the forthcoming elections

- Meregini who is contesting Abia state House of Assembly Umuahia East constituency seat said Buhari has done well to win votes of Abians

- The Abia APC leader said President Buhari’s commitment to the 2nd Niger Bridge and Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway was worthwhile

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia, Austin Meregini, aka “Ugolee” on Monday, January 21, expressed optimism that the party would deliver over 90% votes of the state for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

Meregini, the APC candidate for the Umuahia East constituency seat in the Abia state House of Assembly, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, the party has grown in leaps and bounds to deliver massive votes for President Buhari.

“APC currently in Abia is now a household name. APC is dominating the state. Definitely, Abians are going to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari.

“In 2015, the whole of Abia gave Buhari less than 20,000 votes; but now, take my word, by the end of the February 16 presidential election, President Buhari is going to secure more than 500,000 votes in Abia.

“If you ask anybody in Abia, we have felt an appreciable presence of the President Buhari-led Federal Government; the school feeding programme and a whole lot of federal projects going on in Abia.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has done appreciably well to win votes of Abians in the forthcoming presidential election,” the candidate said.

According to him, the state government has been claiming responsibility for most federal-sponsored projects.

Meregini alleged that though Abia was one of highest earners in terms of federal allocation, the state was the least developed state in the southeast region.

He noted that there were infrastructure decay and recklessness in governance.

“I want to advise Abians to vote en masse for President Buhari because he means well for Abians and the country. Abia is in a comfortable position in this government.

“This man (Buhari) means well for the Ndigbo to be realistic, I will advise Abians to vote for him. He is the surest route to Igbo presidency.

“We are hopeful and confident that come February 16, Buhari will win in Abia,” Meregini said.

He said that Abia indigenes were holding very important portfolios in Buhari’s government, saying that one is the minister of trade and investment, while the other is the minister of state for foreign affairs.

Meregini said President Buhari’s commitment to the 2nd Niger Bridge and Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway was worthwhile.

The candidate said that the APC leadership in Abia had been campaigning for APC to take over the administration of the state and deliver massive votes for the president.

He said that the party leadership had been taking the message to the nooks and crannies of the state in form of awareness, orientation, sensitisation and education of the people on the intention of Buhari.

On his ambition, Meregini said that the person, currently representing the constituency, was not doing enough and the constituents were not feeling the presence of government.

“I feel, given my background in political science, I have what it takes to bring quality representation to my people,’’ he said.

According to him, apart from lawmaking, he said will make efforts to bring government’s impact to the people if elected.

The cleric made the declaration in an interview with the NAN in Daura on Sunday, January 20.

He said the religious body had formed seven formidable committees that would continue to sensitise members to the imperative of re-electing the duo of Buhari and Masari.

According to him, the religious body has a voter-strength of 2.5 million, stressing that majority of this number had their permanent voter cards handy.
